This is my first restoration and I'm trying to remove the forks for respraying. However, when I start to unscrew the long stem bolt it gets tighter as I unscrew. I don't want to knacker anything, but wonder if I have to tap downwards on it with a hammer to loosen the nut inside (like I did when working on my Chopper bars)? Any advice on the correct disassembly would be appreciated.

Hi mate and welcome!
I'd be inclined to maybe place a block of wood on top and give it a whack with a hammer, it could be that the stem wedge or even the shaft of the stem itself has rusted in. Maybe squirt some WD40 in there and leave for a few days first.

Got it out! Like Eagy1976 said I sprayed it with WD40, left it and tapped it with a rubber hammer and out it popped. Simples!
